Rookie quarterback Justin Herbert continues to impress as he threw for 4 touchdowns on Monday night football against the New Orleans Saints. Despite his tremendous effort the Chargers lost 27-30 after a Wil Lutz 36-yard field goal in overtime.
The Chargers started off very strong. The defense only allowed one drive of more than 6 plays in the first half. This is great against a team that relies on short passes and the running game to move the ball. On the other side of the ball the offense also played well as they managed to score 20 points against New Orleans’ 3 with 4:25 left on the clock in the second quarter. At this point the Chargers had an 88% win probability. The Saints eventually managed to close the gap to ten points by scoring a touchdown just before halftime.
The second half started off slow with a battle for field position. The only score was a 53-yard Saints’ field goal making it a one score game with 13-20 lead for the Chargers. The Saints then tied the game at the beginning of the fourth quarter. Both defenses then buckled down as both teams had to punt on their next drive. The Chargers eventually broke through when Justin Herbert threw a 65-yard touchdown to Mike Williams. This is an amazing clutch performance from a young quarterback.
Live bettors who trust Drew Brees had an amazing opportunity to jump in here as the Chargers win probability rose to 92.7%. The Saints eventually managed to tie the game with 52 seconds left on a Taysom Hill 9-yard run.
Justin Herbert then continued his clutch performance as he got the Chargers in field goal range. But Badgley missed the game-winning 50-yard field goal attempt which meant the game had to go to overtime. Will Lutz then scored a field goal and the Saints defense stopped the Chargers for a 27-30 win.
