After a tough loss against the Dallas Cowboys last week Minnesota was looking to rebound against Carolina. The Panthers on the other hand got an easy 20-0 win against Detroit last week despite struggling a bit this season as they were sitting at 4-7.
The first half was quite calm. The Vikings opened the score in the first quarter by scoring a touchdown. A couple of drives later Minnesota linebacker Eric Kendricks made an important play in the red zone by intercepting a pass from Teddy Bridgewater at the Vikings’ 7-yard line. This didn’t give the Vikings good enough field position so they weren’t able to capitalize. The Panthers then tied the game up on their next drive. With 1:52 left in the first half the Vikings drove down the field and they were able to score a field goal as time ran out.
Minnesota entered the second half with a 3-point lead but then there was an absolute game changing play. Dalvin Cook fumbled on the third play of the drive which allowed Panthers’ outside-linebacker Jeremy Chinn to score a fumble return touchdown. But on the next Vikings play Kirk Cousins fumbled the ball which once again allowed Chinn to return the fumble for a touchdown as the Panthers went from down 3 to up 11 points in less than one minute! The teams then exchanged field goals as the Panthers went into the fourth quarter with an 11-point lead and a 90% win probability.
Both teams started off the fourth quarter by scoring a field goal. The Vikings then scored a touchdown with a 2-point conversion which brought the gap back to 3 points. The Vikings defense then buckled up and stopped Carolina but disaster struck when Chad Beebee muffed a punt which allowed the Panthers to recover the ball at Minnesota’s 9-yard line. But a relentless Minnesota defense made another big stop in the red zone which meant Carolina had to settle for a field goal with 1:51 left. Kirk Cousins then showed his amazing clutch play ability as he led the Vikings 75-yards down the field and scored a touchdown in only 45 seconds. Joey Slye then missed the game-winning field goal which meant the Vikings won 27-28 in an exciting matchup where the Vikings put up 18 points in the fourth quarter.
